Star Trails Post Processing Tutorial

After getting back from taking some star trails pictures here is my preferred method of post processing them explained in a very brief manner. I've also provided a free video below to show you these steps in action. 

1. Load all your images into a RAW photo processor of your choice such as Lightroom or Adobe Camera RAW.
2. Adjust a single exposure out of the series to get the white balance, darks, lights and all of the other settings to mimic what you would like to see in your final image. Now sync all of your other images from the shoot to exactly match this image. This is very easy using the "Sync" option in Lightroom. 
3. Export all of your files to JPEG, TIFF or whatever other format you like. Note: If you choose TIFF and plan to export a few hundred picture files you either need a really fast computer with lots of RAM or some magic. I would suggest JPEG in the case of star trail pictures.
4. Layer all of the files on top of each other in Photoshop. I like to use Adobe Bridge to do this using the "Load Files into Photoshop as Layers" function. 
5. Select all of the picture layers in Photoshop EXCEPT the bottom one and change the blend mode to lighten. 
6. Boom, that's it. You should now see a picture that mimics one long star trail for each star location.  I go on to do many different other adjustments to this image after completing the steps above, but that's for another tutorial:)

The Last Drop - Palouse Falls, WA

It's extremely exciting to have the chance to take 18 photographers up to Mount Rainier National Park this weekend and teach them everything I know about star photography, including shooting and post processing. Everything is looking good to go including the upcoming meteor showers. I'm headed out for the week, so I'll leaving you all with some good star photography info and a bunch of pictures. The Shot

The night sky in the Palouse Region of Washington State is so dark that sometimes you can't see your own hand. This makes it a star photographer's paradise. I remember taking this shot only a few minutes before the moon came up and completely destroyed any chances of Milky Way shots.

I Cover the Waterfront - Alki Beach, WA

Sometimes I hold on to photos forever before posting them or even processing them, such as the ones from my Maui trip in December. Others for some reason or another get processed right away like the shot posted tonight. I love going back through old photos, especially if their lost and forgotten at the point, then processing them. I'll leave you with a long exposure "How To" video I made while taking the shot posted below. It includes some tips for extremely sharp images. You can find all my free videos HERE on YouTube! After posting a nature and city picture back to back I may as well give you the best of both worlds... Enjoy!

Once in a while I get enough time to venture over to Alki Beach. Sitting around the house wide awake last week around 5 AM, I decided I had nothing better to do than stay up til sunrise. It ended up being well worth the long night and the sunrise was amazingly colorful.

Ride On - West Fjords, Iceland

While out in the Olympic Peninsula shooting streams and waterfalls last weekend along with Second Beach, I decided to make a quick "How To" video on shooting waterfalls. I took it with my iPhone so the quality isn't great, but I still think there are some great tips in there. Enjoy!

The Shot

I clearly don't remember much of this shoot, it was my last day of 10, living out of a camper in the West Fjords of Iceland. None the less June is really an amazing time to visit the country, the sunrises and sets last for 3-5 hours depending on the weather and light. It is truly a photographers' paradise!

Well I'm on a roll why not post another shot from my trip to Oregon a few weeks back. The class length will run approximately 2 hours.

I will be teaching this workshop in the form of a Google Hangout Video Conference. Google Hangouts allows me to share my screen, my voice, and important information with everyone as we work. ( It's like Skype, but better! )

I'll send you an email upon signup thoroughly explaining how to set everything up and how to prepare for the workshop. It's all very easy!

You will also receive a RAW photo file, the same as the one I'll be working on during the workshop. This will allow you to work along at home, as I teach the workshop.

Along the way we will stop for questions, discussion and further learning. You are free to stop me at any time during the workshop to ask questions or make comments.

There will be a question and answer session / overview at the end of the class where you can ask anything you like. We usually all talk, share photos, discuss photography, travel locations, and other fun stuff like that!

The Shot

Walking around downtown Seattle the first night after getting my Nikkor 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye opened other worlds for me. I also had a run in with the usual power tripping security guard. He came up to me and told me that I would need to stop taking pictures of the building. Of course I responded with a line on how it was never illegal to take pictures. He proceeded to tell me he would call the cops. This was a great time to slam him for not being able to do the job himself... I went ahead with the diss, and he filed a hurt feelings report. Needless to say he eventually stood to the side as I snapped off a few shots... On a different note, this fisheye captures massive file sizes this one was 62MB and had to be downsized for the post. Enjoy!

A few pointers for learning the techniques contained in these tutorials..

In order to fully understand and master each tutorial you must move in order. It will be very hard to learn the material contained in Part II without fully understanding everything in Part I. 

The pause button is your friend. When I am learning from tutorials, I constantly pause the video, learn the new method, then continue with the tutorial. 

If possible, use two computers. One of the best learning tools is having an extra screen to watch the tutorial on, this will cut down on the confusion from learning a new subject and switching back and forth between windows.

The content contained in these tutorials is by no means easy to learn, it took me hours to put these techniques together, let alone learn them for the first time. Do not get discouraged, instead learn as much as you can and continue to learn until you are happy with the results. Over time these techniques will become second nature and you can start to tweak the different methods and allow them to easily integrate into your own workflow:) Keep in mind there is no right or wrong way to process a picture!  Along with my tutorial, I highly recommend the content I have provided in the links below.
